    Grazie, Stella Maris, e scusatemi

il contesto è il racconto di quel che si è fatto la scorsa settimana.
dopo aver parlato degli altri giorni, dovrei dire "sabato scorso sono andato in piscina a nuotare"
    potrei dire
"Last Saturday, I went to the pool to swim." o "Last Saturday, I went to the pool and I had a swim"?
    Thank you very much :)

Ciao, Anna - la traduzione letterale è la prima (Last Saturday, I went to the pool to swim) ma il problema è che non suona naturale in inglese. Di solito "go swimming" si usa piuttosto che "to swim." Io direi, per esempio, "Last Saturday I went to the pool to go swimming," or "Last Saturday I went swimming in the pool."

Entrambi vanno bene ma la seconda è più naturale. In alternativa potresti dire

Last Saturday I went to the pool to have a swim

Hi, elfa - another difference between BE and AE! :) "to have a swim" is definitely not part of my lexicon!

Really? :) I would say this is the most natural in BE!

I don't know, maybe I shouldn't say "AE" - but definitely not in NYE or NJE (New York/New Jersey) :D

Perhaps it's to do with personal ways of speaking. I doubt I would say "Last Sunday, I went to the pool to have a swim." It sounds a little too correct ;) I'd more probably say "Last Sunday I went to the pool for a swim."

Just for completeness, we say that too. :) Go for a swim, went for a swim :tick:

I was wondering, wouldn't "at the pool" be more precise? When we say "Sono andato in piscina", we are often referring to a Piscina Comunale".

Hi L'Enrico - yes "at the pool" would be fine. I don't know if it's "more precise," though. There are many ways to say the same thing.
