in the wordreference dictionary, this is translated as "to take to"...but does it specifically refer to going to BED since "lit" is in the sentence?

    se mettre au lit

I would actually simply use 'to go to bed'.
To take to bed would imply to take someone to bed.

    Not neccessarily.

To take to the bed means spending an extended period of time in bed.

Agreed, as in when being sick.
However in French, with 'se mettre au lit', take to bed would not be correct.
