several more misions and adventures of John followed

I teach English. My students had to write a text about a superhero. I did not play a role whether they wrote about a "real" superhero such as Batman or made up their own. A girl wrote the following:

John came and saved her. That was his first mission, but several more missions and adventures of John followed. (That's the last sentence of the text.)

I'd cross out the highlighted part (of John) since it is clear who is meant anyway. Apart from that, it sounds quite odd.

Yes it does. (This is in answer to your hypothetical question "Does it sound odd to you?") It doesn't (to me) sound quite right even after you delete those two words:(
