All newswires are sending the story that Carlos Slim overtook Bill Gates' place as the richest person in the world. Now, should it be Billonario or Millonario?

Billion is not the same as billón. How can "Billionaire" be translated?

Ahora, yo no diría "el millonario más rico del mundo", es algo redundante, es como decir "el rico más rico". Yo lo dejaría como "el hombre más rico del mundo.

Here you must bear in mind that there are two different scales for billion :

    1. short scale : one thousand millions = 1.000.000.000, American standard

    2. long scale : one million millions = 1.000.000.000.000, old meaning in English standard and many other countries

The short scale is increasingly being adopted nowadays.

If I would read billonario. I would understand that it is in the American stand form, as hardly would somebody own a million millions at the present rate.

In Spanish, a "billion" is not used. The term used is "mil millones", which literally means "thousand million."

    $1 billion = $1,000 millones

    2. long scale : one million millions = 1.000.000.000.000, old English standard also used in other countries

Their is an increasing trend to go over to the short scale standard everywhere.

If I would read billonario I would understand that it refers to the American standard, as hardly would somebody own privately one million millions at the present currency rate.

    Multimillonario would suit best.

Que Slim sea el hombre más rico del mundo no es algo de que los mexicanos tengamos que enorgullecernos.
    Pobre de mi país.
