How long does it take a native Spanish speaker to learn Portuguese? How about if he moves to a Spanish or Portuguese-speaking country? How similar are the two languages?

    Thanks,
    -Jonathan.

Your question is too general, and I don't know of any studies about this issue. Usually, a Portuguese-speaking person can understand simple sentences in Spanish to some extent, but not enough to speak or write fluently.

To JLanguage: a native Spanish speaker could become an advanced Portuguese speaker within 6 months to a year, living in a Portuguese-speaking country and going to a language school (at least that is my experience). There will still be non-native speaker errors; word order, prepositions, etc. In my case this is accentuated by the fact that I grew up from the age of 9 in England (so my prepositional errors tend to come from Spanish and my word order errors from English - there are also some, but not many problems with false friends - Spanish/Portuguese and vice-versa).
