Context: a travel brochure, it is the title to a section on visting the "real" USA

    Phrase: "Stati Unit d'autore"

The brochure refers to history, nature, modern culture.... what makes the USA the USA from a tourist point of view.

How might you translate "d'autore" in this context?
    I'm a bit stumped.

    Thanks very much

I'd like to add that it is definitely a play on words, anyway.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions.

I think this is yet another instance of a "translation" just not working to give the right idea in English.

I think I need something that is equally a "play on words" as the original, but the anglicized version!

(Personally I think that given the context it is still mega tourist USA, not the real thing, but that's just my humble opinion...... as the translator i this case I'm obliged to present the point of view of ...-d'autore, no...l'autore!) :)

I think that Unni meant simply that it was not to be taken literally, not a "doppio senso " of any sort, but linguistic playfulness.
And my reply was to indicate that I would have to be as playful and creative as the original author.

Sorry if I caused any confusion!
