When you stay in a hotel you are often charged with "une taxe de séjour " are there any translations for that tax in English?
    Thank you

What's the right expression for "taxe de sejour" please? That's what they charge you if you stay at a hotel in Reunion Island. Could it be a local tax? Many thanks

In english I believe we have a:

    or just:

    Occupancy Tax

    Hi,

"taxe de séjour" applies to temporary rented places too (typically the ones you'd take during holidays), not only hotel.

At my French tourist office, we translate "taxe de séjour" as "local city tax" in our brochures.

"Local city tax" only works for a city! In most of rural/seaside France it's going to be tourist tax.

Hi, I've translated this french -
Facturation avec TVA au taux en vigueur, mention des autres taxes (taxe de séjour) et totaux T.T.C.
    as
Invoicing with VAT at the current rate, reference to other taxes (tax) and total including taxes.

but I just wondered if there was a better translation for taxe de séjour in a business context.

    Thanks

I wasn't thinking in terms of business trips but that makes perfect sense now! Thanks for all your help I only have 4 pages left to translate and I'll try and remember to say no next time i'm asked :)

Taxe de séjour is variously translated as "tourist tax", "visitors' tax" or "residential tax". But indeed it applies to anyone staying in a hotel, guest house, gîte etc. It doesn't exist everywhere in France - each local authority can decide whether to impose it.
