    Does "tant que jusqu'à" translate to "that is, until.."?? I am translating something into French..."She used to be the favourite. That is, until he heard about what she had done."
    Would it work?

    That is= Autrement dit
    jusqu´à (ce que) = until

    Thanks, International Jools. But wouldn't "autrement dit" translate as "in other words" which has a different meaning?

    ok maybe it's slightly different but in essence it's the same.
    In other words = autrement dit, ie I'm going to explain this with different words.
    That is= c'est á dire= That is to say

    Oui, on pourrait traduire Elle était la préférée. C'est-à-dire, jusqu'à ce que ... mais on ne pourrait pas du tout employer ici "Autrement dit", parce que la phrase qui suit apporte une précision qui contredit la première. Le plus courant en français serait, je pense, Elle était la préférée. Enfin, jusqu'à ce que ...

    Mais il est vrai que C'est-à-dire s'emploie parfois, comme ça en début de phrase, et suivi d'une virgule, pour introduire une restriction. Comme, je suppose, That is, dans l'exemple discuté ici.

    That's funny, I'd have more spontaneously said "tout du moins". Anyway, I believe they are exact synonyms.
