"The police are investigating what what was the purpose."

    Mr Mishra told reporters, "The police are investigating what kind of bomb it was and what was the purpose."

    The above is from a local newspaper. Should the underlined part be "what the purpose was"?

    Karen, I think even with your emendation, the sentence is awkward. Presumably we need to talk about the purpose of the bombing rather than the purpose of the bomb. I might change it to 'why the bomb was planted' or similar.
