    Hi everybody,

I'm translating a sentence in a book (a biography). I'm not sure about the meaning of the word funk; actually, I'm not sure about the register that I should use in Italian.

    This is the sentence:
"There are many different ways to come out of a funk like that"
(In this case, funk refers to drug addiction)

    My attempt:
"Ci sono un sacco di modi diversi per uscire da quella merda/quel casino/quel pantano"

    Which is the right tone???
    Thank you
    Simona

    Hi simoeire

The first meaning of "funk" for me is "a state of depression". È una parola gergale ma non è volgare. :)

That's exactly what I was trying to understand...I think that in this case 'casino' can be the right choice...not too vulgar, but suitable to describe the difficult situation.
    Thanks a lot

I'm not sure I follow... can "casino" equate to "stato di depressione"?

Maybe if you add "interiore" it could be.....so "casino interiore" could do the job, but it's very informal....maybe could be felt like a bit vulgar (my granny wouldn't say that)

Not really...the problem is that I don't think the author really refers to a state of depression here. In fact, in the paragraph that comes before, he describes a series of physical problems caused by alcohol. That's why I thought that 'casino' can be the right word to describe the difficult situation he was living in.

Ok, but the 'casino' is not only inside him, but also outside...I cannot find the right word to give the idea without being too soft or vulgar...
