I would like to translate "Top of the sky" into French. Would it be:

    Haut du ciel

    or
    Haut dans le ciel?

It's sort of a tag line or title -- imagine "Top of the sky" being used as a book, film, or song title.

I would never say so - definitely!
This conveys the idea of one resting on a flat surface, which it obviously is not. And that's also the name given to the Himalayas, for instance.

Yet this depends on how far you consider this top to be.

    - "au plus haut des cieux" but it has a religious connotation, I think.

I agree with the others that this isn't specific enough. The translation can vary depending on the actual subject of said book, film, song.

For instance in astronomy, top of the sky = zenith

Other than the literal sommet du ciel, so far my vote goes to petit1's : « au delà des nuages ».

    Other ideas :

    Zénith bleu /céleste
    Entre zénith et horizon
    Toujours plus haut...
