I warned you that the story might change under my hands. I forgot that the storyteller changes too. I was under your hands.

    The PowerBook by Jeanette Winterson

Does 'under one's hands' mean 'at one's mercy'?

    Please help. Thank you.

"At one's mercy" seems too dramatic for this odd phrase. I'd say that "I was under your hands" means "You readers also affected me".
