    Our college team is selected for the competition.
    Our college team is being selected for the competition.
    Our college team has been selected for the competition.

    If selected is adjective, and the news is recent?

    There is a static passive voice (The door is closed), but it's not idiomatic here. Few are chosen is idiomatic, though.;)
