    Hi,
If I want to ask Obama the position among all the presidents of the USA, can I say " what number president is Obama"?
Similar question is "what number room are you living in".
Thank you very much in advance!

It is not very elegant and I would say, "Which number president is Obama?" but, in informal conversation, your question seems natural and I can't think of another short way of asking this question.

Thank you. You mean "which" is more elegant than "what"? But why do we say "what number room is it" rather than "which number room"?
