Yıldırım / şimşek

    İt give same translation in dictionaries but i would know what is difference?

    They ususally mean the same thing: lightning

    However, technically, şimşek is the electrical jump from one cloud to another, while yıldırım is the lightning that reaches the ground. Therefore, when the lightning strikes a tree, we say yıldırım düştü/çarptı -- ( not *şimşek düştü)
