à (la) liberté (To Liberty!)

    A silly question, but perhaps an appropriate one, in view of the season. Then, the context:
    When people make a toast for something, which is not a person, but rather an idea, do you need an article, or not? For instance:
    “A la liberté” ou “à liberté” ?

    A la liberté.

    Broad concepts such as freedom take the definite article in French.
