vital force = élan vital (from Termium)
Concept dû à Henri Bergson (1907), représentant une énergie cosmique, non infinie, créatrice des formes de la vie et des espèces vivantes, et principe de l'évolution.

The Collins-Robert Dictionary gives "life force". One could translate the passage as: "Little by little we lose our [creative] vital drive." or "Gradually, our [creative] life force is draining away."
Henri Bergson developed his theory of élan vital to provide a novel explanation of creative evolution. In Bergson's view, evolution of matter is orderly and predictable, but creativity is chaotic and the effect of the élan vital on the material environment; it manifests itself by unpredictable leaps and bounds.
