    Thank you for your message. @DearPrudence and I have had lengthy discussions on this subject (I know, we lead exciting lives ;)). You start counting étages in French from the first floor (UK), second floor (US). So a building with cinq étages actually has a ground floor (US: 1st floor), plus five floors above that. So, in English, it has six floors.
