Hi,

The sentence is from a cartoon in Romanian with subtitles in English. A man is talking to his servant about their travel on a steamer:

Audio

Și, ei bine, vaporul ?...?.

And, well, the steamer is early.

I didn't decipher what he is saying after "vaporul". Could you please help?

Thank you.

  • Și, ei bine, vaporul, e în avans (...) [is early/ahead of schedule]
I have some doubts though because I'm missing the context, that's not quite how I'd put it.

Hi farscape, thank you for your response. Please see below for more context:

Servant: Bombay, domnule! Nu m-am gândit nici în cele mai îndrăznețe vise că voi vizita India!

Lord: Și, ei bine, vaporul ??...??. Am câștigat două zile.

The easiest way is to say “vaporul ajunge mai devreme” to avoid the debate around “vaporul a mers mai repede”.

I don't get very well what you mean, but I guess you are saying that what is said in the audio is "vaporul e în avans", but "vaporul ajunge mai devreme" is better to avoid confusion?

In English a ship/boat sales, an airplane flies, etc. In Romanian to say that a "ship goes" (vaporul merge) when it's sailing and not touching the ground (like a train, bicycle, car) is a bit strange. It's fine to say this boat/ship/vessel travels/goes to (vaporul merge la...) for the destination.
We have the verb a naviga which is literally to navigate, ut it's used for the literal meaning, to navigate a course. The discussion gets complex very fast :)
