    where did the name Άι Βασίλη come from? I believe he is the Greek equivalent of Santa Clause...
    Greeks picked a different saint to be the one who gives gifts, and chose Saint Basil the Great, Μέγας (or Άγιος) Βασίλειος in Greek, with was simplified over time.

    This article is about Saint Basil. Άι is the short form of άγιος. I guess it came about because of its the frequent use of άγιος (what with all the saints, the saints' days, the numerous churches and the villages named after a saint :) )
