Would someone be able to clear up this expression for me? I assume it has to do with traffic so my guess would be to "beat" traffic as in: "не застрять в пробке"?

You need to provide more context.
Without context, It sounds like someone is forcing themselves through a traffic jam, by ramming into other cars and pushing them to the side (check the word таран on WR dictionary).

I've heard yesterday in Moscow "машина протаранила пробку", is that it?
Then it's the car slammed into the cars in traffic jam on about 190 km/h.

Exactly. Young idiots in Subaru smashed five other cars.

Протаранить пробку to smash into traffic jam

Не застрять в пробке skip a traffic jam
Пробираться сквозь затор means to slicе through the traffic by squeezing in between cars
Протаранить автопробку как на большой скорости врезаться в группу машин, this is a situation when high-speed car smashes straight into traffic jam
