שלום!

I know יֵיאש means "to drive to despair", while הִתְיָאֵשׁ means "to be desperate". My question is: if יֵיאש is from pi'el, why is it not pronounced yi'esh? Why is it pronounced ye'esh instead?

Thanks!

To add to Drink's answer, it happens with all roots with א or ר in in the middle and sometimes also with ע and ה.
This phenomenon is called תשלום דגש.
