להשבע

Hello everybody!

I had a question about להשבע. If I want to say 'I don't wanna swear.' will I pronounce it ani lo rotse lehishave or lehishava? We say 'to enter' is lehikanes, so why don't they say 'lehishave' for to swear? I heard an Israeli say lehishava.

Thanks

  • Basically, there are two grammatical options.
    1. לְהִשָּׁבֵעַ = le-hi-sha-ve-a'
    2. לְהִשָּׁבַע = le-hi-sha-va'

The common way to say it is (2).

The reason of (2) ends with the vowel "a" is because of the throat letter Ayin.
This can happen also with letter Het.
as is להפתח which also has the two options as above (while the (2) is the common one).
