Is there a difference between ללמוד את and ללמוד על? For example,

בשיעור גאוגרפיה למדנו את הים התיכון
בשיעור גאוגרפיה למדנו על הים התיכון
In geography class, we studied the Mediterranean Sea.

Is there a difference between the two sentences?

Sounds more like "we explored the Mediterranean".
It was an interactive study, we were not just passive listeners.
Maybe we sailed in a boat or went along the shore..
This is how I understand it.
