נטל vs משא

New to posting on Wordreference, so please let me know if there's some convention for handling/tracking these 'near synonym' cases, as I imagine they come up a lot.

I'm wondering how the words 'משא' and 'נטל' are different? When would you use one versus the other? What is the nearest english synonym for each? Which is more commonly used?

As you said, these are near synonyms.
I'd translate then both to burden, depending on the context. משא is closer to load.
משא is more nutral. נטל is always negative.
You can roughly say that משא is more physical and נטל is more mental, but it is not always the case.
