Someone posted this comment on a picture of an artpiece by a Saudi artist:

الثقافة بوادي وانت بوادي ثاني

While the meaning is perfectly clear, I was wondering if this ("__ bi wadi wa __ bi wadi thani") is a common turn of phrase or just colorful language on the part of whoever posted the comment. Also, if it is an expression is it a Saudi one or used elsewhere, as well?

  • This is also used in Algeria, in Algerian it would be الثقافة في وَادْ ونْتا في وَادْ (... fi wād w nta fi wād), there is a similar one:
X في جيهة وX في جيهة [اخرى]

It is used in Fusha too, not just in dialects.

in Algerian it would be الثقافة في وَادْ ونْتا في وَادْ
Same in Palestinian! واد, not وادي, and no ثاني/تاني at the end.

In my variety, I have بـ-, not في/فـ-, but other people use the latter.

الثقافة بواد وإنت بواد (iθ-θaqāfe bwād u-ʔinte bwād)

And this is from a Lebanese song by Fairuz:
طلع المنادي ينادي، ما فيهاش إفادة
    الرعيان بوادي والقطعان بوادي
(الرعيان represent the politicians, القطعان the people)
