مفعول له

Hi

Two classic examples of مفعول له are قعدتُ عن الحرب جُبْنا and ًضربتُه تأديبا. What exactly is the difference between the maf'ool lah in each of them? Someone said that in one of them the maf'ool lah is the cause of the action while in the other it is the result of the action. What does that mean? And could someone please give me some more examples of each of these two types?

Thank you so much

  • In both examples the مفعول له (or مفعول لأجله) is denoting the cause of the action. In the first, 'I didn't go to war because I chickened out;' in the second, 'I hit him because I was disciplining him.'

There are two types of reason:

    1. cause
    2. purpose

The مفعول له in قعدتُ عن الحرب جُبْنا is a cause, while the one in ًضربتُه تأديبا is a purpose.
