Hi everyone,

When used without an adjective or number or anything what does مفعول مطلق add to the verb? In one part of the Quran it says

فَوَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِلْمُكَذِّبِينَ 11 الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي خَوْضٍ يَلْعَبُونَ 12 يَوْمَ يُدَعُّونَ إِلَىٰ نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ دَعًّا 13

Can you tell me what is the addition in meaning of دَعًّا?

Thank you in advance

  • I think the exact semantics of this are difficult to capture in English. It doesn't add much, if anything, to the actual meaning. But it does add a nuance, an emphasis on the particular nature of the action (in this case being 'pushed' or 'thrust' or 'driven down'). This is why translations often go with something like 'thrust violently' for يُدع دعا, using an adverb to try and express the same idea. Sometimes people characterise this construction as 'emphatic' or 'intensifying', but it doesn't always intensify the meaning per se.
