What does يقصص في قصصه mean and why is the verb not يقصّ?

1104 – حدثنا يحيى بن بكير قال: حدثنا الليث، عن يونس، عن ابن شهاب: أخبرني الهيثم بن أبي سنان:

أنه سمع أبا هريرة رضي الله عنه، وهو يقصص في قصصه، وهو يذكر رسول الله ﷺ : (إن أخا لكم لا يقول الرفث). يعني بذلك عبد الله بن رواحة:

وفينا رسول الله يتلو كتابه – إذا انشق معروف من الفجر ساطع

أرنا الهدى بعد العمى فقلوبنا – به موقنات أن ما قال واقع

يبيت يجافي جنبه عن فراشه – إذا استثقلت بالمشركين المضاجع

تابعه عقيل. وقال الزبيدي: أخبرني الزهري، عن سعيد والأعرج، عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه.​

It's يَقص not يقصص (it might be a typo).

Maybe it's in the jussive (مجزوم), i.e. يَقْصُصْ?

Why would it be مجزوم? There is no أداة جزم nor شرط, so there is no possibility of جزم here.

There is a possibility that it is يقصّص, in this case it would mean to trace or track. Even then, the most common is still يقصّ الأثر not يقصّص الأثر.

Having said that, I haven’t heard يقصّص to mean to tell a story, but perhaps it was possible in CA, I don’t know.

Of course, a typo is still possible, in my opinion quite likely.

يَقْصُصُ فِي قَصَصِهِ

If it is يَقصُصُ in the present than the past form would be قَصَصَ, and I don't think this verb exists (قَصَصَ يقصُصُ).
This is from a Hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari, and in some manuscripts it is written "يَقُصُّ" and others "يَقْصُصُ". This is probably a typo from the scribes.

The correct form is "يَقُصُّ" as stated in the margin of Sahih al-Bukhari (طبعة دار التأصيل).

يقصص في قصصه = Telling his stories (literally)

There is a difference between قِصص and قَصص: with fatHa the stories are true, and with kasrah the stories are fiction.
