“I looked him in the eyes”

Hey guys,

I’m looking for the Dutch equivalent of the German “ich habe ihm in die Augen gesehen”
With the indirect object pronoun.

The translation I have already is “ik keek in zijn ogen” which seems to be a bit literal.

    What is the context?

If "ik" is an ophtalmologist , then "ik keek in zijn ogen" is perfectly OK.

If it is a more literary context, like "I looked him in the eyes to see if he was telling the truth", the I would say it as "Ik keek hem in de ogen".
