“I was late signing up because of my job”
Could you tell me why we use the gerund form “signing” after “I was late”? I mean what kind of grammar structure it is.

    I'm not sure how to explain the grammar structure of it, but it's pretty common to hear someone say that. Another way to say the same sentence would be, "I signed up late because of my job".
