“thicket” of coverage

Senior Member
This is about how to create value from patents one owns.
Does it mean the scope that a lot of similar patents cover?
Some patents and applications are valuable in their own right, some for their potential for additional patents to issue in the future, some for specific product or feature coverage, and some only for the fact that they add an additional patent to the “thicket” of coverage in a portfolio.

Have you ever tried to run through a thicket? Those leaves and branches may look small but there are so many of them so close together that they'll stop you from getting through. Adding more leaves and branches just makes it that much tougher.
