Hi everyone

I am curious about the ずるり use in the following sentence :
彼が妻だと語る切断された身体の一部が、ずるりと形状を崩す。

(It is a fantasy where a monster has a head off and he survives while the other head is his wife died).

Anyway I wonder about ずるり use. I heard it was an onomatopeia but deepl says "The head slyly loses its shape".

    • The word helps describe how the shape changed. I get the image of the head sort of melting, losing its shape gradually. The basic idea of the word is that of "slipping," but of course we wouldn't use that word in an English translation.

    I think it's kind of an onomatopoeia or onomatopoeic.
    It's an adverb how it changes its style.

    彼が妻だと語る切断された身体の一部が、ぱっと形状を崩す。"The head suddenly/abruptly loses its shape."
    彼が妻だと語る切断された身体の一部が、どろりと(どろっと）形状を崩す。"The head is melting and loses its shape."
    彼が妻だと語る切断された身体の一部が、バーンと形状を崩す。"The head explodes and loses its shape."
    彼が妻だと語る切断された身体の一部が、ずるりと形状を崩す。"The head is sliding slowly with creating a very small sound "zuzuzu" or without any sound, and loses its shape. The speed is rather slowly, but not very slowly nor too fast, not a single instant."
    I beleive this is the basic concept expressed by ずるりと, which native Japanese speakers would be able to understand at once.

    The DeepL's translation is obviously wrong in this context.
    ずるりと≠ずるく, ずるいやり方で.

    So yes. Deepl translation is clearly wrong there as it has nothing to do with slyness. So it is just effect of losing its shape.
