Dear Japanese forum,

I'm doing researches about a peculiar expression and wanted to hear your opinion.
Do you know the anime series Digimon Adventure? It aired on TV in 1999. One of the digital monsters of the show (a giant cactus) attacks by lauching his needles towards the enemies while rotating on himself at high speed. This attack is called

チクチク is no problem, but what's the meaning of バンバン? Most western sources interpret it as "bang bang", but I'm not so sure.

Searching on the Internet, I've found a tool with the same name used for "Pressing pain stimulation technique":
芝山鍼灸整骨院のチクチク療法|無血刺絡療法・PPST
I guess it's meant to be 万万 in this case. I don't know if there is a connection, nor if this tool already existed 20 years ago.

This page is interesting too:
Problem L:
Its author talks about a toy with the very same name he had as a kid, and it involed a train carrying a catcus (!!!). Unfortunately, I couldn't find more informations about it.

Of course, that ばんばん could also mean "vigorously", which is maybe the simplest interpretation. However I feel there could be some wordplay/cultural reference involved, and I was wondering if this expression ringed a bell to the natives.

Thank you so much for your help!

I think it basically comes from merely the pun of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (チキチキバンバン)", which was a fantasy musical movie in 1968. It was an awesome movie for those who are more than 60 years now, and maybe it can affect their children and grandchildren.
(In 1999, those who were more than 40 would have known that movie.)

I also thought it sounded similar to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (it's quite known here in Italy too!) but I didn't give it too much weight. If it came to your mind too it could be an element to consider more seriously. Maybe they just took the title and reinterpreted it as in gengo's explanation.

Nobody knows anything about the toy with the same name mentioned on the linked page? It looked like an interesting lead to me.

    Thank you!

Besides gunshots, バンバン is an onomatopoeia for thumping hard. The official Digimon site reads (s.v.
Yes, this digimon punches with its thorny fists.
