他英文比我说得流利<多了>

I have difficulty with 多了 in 他英文比我说得流利多了. Well, it`s obvious that the meaning is 'He is much more fluent in English than me',but before I`ve come across the pattern {adj + 得 + 多} covering this meaning,so the familiar wording for me would be 他英文比我说得流利得多. Looking up 了 or 多了 in a dictionary was vain. Would appreciate it if someone explained what is it I`m dealing with here.

Coinn, you voiced my guesses about "了“ being used just for balance in this sentence,but I needed to make sure,and I am now,thanks to you.多谢。As for 流利多 being an abbreviation of 流利得多 - I haven`t been able to find this information in any grammar books I have,so thanks again and have a nice day,too.

Coinn, sorry, just one last one,as some misunderstanding has come up: 他喝得多 can have two interpretations: 1. ‘He drinks too much’ or 2. ‘He drank too much’. So the tense can be either 1.present or 2.past

My question is: can 你喝多了also have two interpretations, present or past,or because it now has ‘了’ ,it implies only the past tense (‘He drank too much’)? In other words, can 你喝多了 be interpreted as 'He drinks too much' ,i.e. as the present tense ?

My pleasure. Expressions { adj + "得“ + adv } such as "喝得多” emphasize the degree/level. The example of "他喝得多“ mostly is interpretated as 'He drinks too much. Just as you guess, "了” implies the things have been done. But when someone says "他喝多了“, it means '( he has drunk too much and ) he is drunk'.
