I was watching a legal drama recently, and a secretary asks a lawyer (about an assistant that he recently hired):
"你到底为什么招她？你这不是等于给自己埋(mái)雷吗？"

Would anyone know what 埋雷 means?

埋雷 is a metaphorical expression. You bury a landmine somewhere, someday you end up being exploded. You destroy the relationship with her, you burn your bridges. You are taking a false move with consequences in the future.

time bomb:

用“定时炸弹”打比方时，突出的是其“延迟”的特性，即“不会当场爆炸”，但日后有隐患。至于定时的时长，受害人也是不知道的。

作为目前的流行语，“埋雷”的另一个近义词是“挖坑”。

不定时炸弹的“定时”不是设定时间的意思，而是规律的、固定的时间，“不定时”就是时间不规律、不固定。比如，老板喜欢不定时地检查工作。炸弹可能被设置为1分钟后爆炸，也可能被设置为1年以后爆炸，我们不知道。

未来某一时刻很可能会炸，不过这种风险只炸一次，炸完这个风险就结束了。例如：上海持续高温，小心爱车里的这些物品变成"定时炸弹"。

不定时炸弹：
如上面的例子和描述。这种风险时不时、不定时的一直发生或者存在。

I'd say that only if I know it for certain. For example, if I know that something will explode exactly after 50 minutes, and will not before the time limit, then I'd say it's a 定時炸彈. Whether or not the explosion will recur doesn't matter:
