如果我不知道主语是谁，我应该如何表达它呢？

比如，我问别人：“报纸上说什么？”

What does it say on the newspaper?

‘on the newspaper’是地点状语，'it'并不是指代报纸。仔细想想'it'应该是指报社的某位记者。
这里就设计到一个问题如何表达未知主语。在英文中，如果说话人不知道主语是谁，是否可以用'it'充当主语呢？

考虑到英文非常注重逻辑，我不知道这里应该用“写了什么？”还是“说了什么？”。哪一个更地道些呢？
按照中文的习惯，“写”和“说”都是一样的，不过对我个人而言，通常选择使用“说”这个字。

另外一种表达未知主语的方法就是使用被动语态。

What does it write on the newspaper? 报纸写了什么？
如果不使用'it'充当主语。

What is it newspaper writen? 我是这样理解的，报纸本身没有生命它不会发出写这个动作，所以用被动语态来表达是一个很好的选择，尤其是不知道主语是谁的情况下。

    你都发现了，一般用it。
    所谓不知道是谁，可能是一件事本身，可能比较抽象，可能是老天爷，总之都用it。
    E.g. It's important for us to learn English... "to learn English..."事情本身。 / It rains... 老天爷。/ It's 9. 事情或时间。 / It's someone. 某个人。

    一般用say。write怎么用我还真不知道，好像强调「写字」或「写作」时才会用write，而强调意见时用say。我只知道It reads ABC 意思是「上面写着ABC」。

    貌似没有这么说话的……你又自己想象着翻译了。

    更没有这么说话的……语法也不成立啊！！即使按照你的死心眼逻辑，也应该是what was written on the newspaper才对吧！？不涉及it啊！！还有written的拼写貌似也不对啊！！哎再仔细想想报纸貌似是被印刷出来的呀不是被写出来的呀！！

    分析个毛啊还分析！！你倒是真的去拿份英文的文章来分析哇！！还猜测呐！！英语是猜测出来的吗你以为推理小说咩？？
    去多背例子吧孩子，look, sound, taste, read既可表主动，也可表被动「看起来」「听起来」「尝起来」「读作」.别的词我也不知道。

    「说」吧。

    I didn't read all the Chinese that was posted above (my Chinese is not that good, unfortunately!), but I just wanted to say that instead of saying "What does it say on the newspaper?", I would say "What does it say in the (news)paper?"
    (using the preposition "in" instead of "on")
     
    I would have a tendancy to say "What does it say in the newspaper?" instead of "What does the newspaper say?", but I think some people would say "What does the newspaper say?", especially in an informal context.
     
    "What does the newspaper say?" (報紙說什麼) vs. "What does it say in the newspaper?" (報上說什麼) ==> They are pretty much the same, but if you want to get technical, you may argue that newspaper is an inanimate object unable to speak or say anything. Perhaps, a comic strip or a comedian may find "newspaper says" (報紙說) a source of amusement and make a joke out of it.

    I was wondering if the posposition 上 can be used with any other types of publications? I mean, is it used with books and magazines?
    这份报纸上有很多有趣的事实。
    这本杂志中有很多有趣的事实。
    这本书中有很多有趣的事实。
