Hello/大家好,

Does anyone know what the expression "旺夫相" means? I heard it on a TV show today and could not find it in the dictionary. Does it have something to do with an ideal for female beauty?

(Also, is the pronunciation wang4fu1xiang4?)

Thanks in advance/谢谢!

    旺 = 使兴旺 "make someone/something prosper"
    夫 = 丈夫 "husband"
    旺夫 = 使丈夫得好运 "make one's husband prosper"
    相 = 容貌,样子, 外观 "look" or "face" as in "face reading"
    旺夫相 wang4fu1xiang4 = having a face suggestive of a personality that will help her husband become prosperous.

    Ah, I was wondering why "man" was in the middle of the word which was used for a woman's face (since it seemed to describe femininity and not masculinity)! Thanks for your explanation, Skatinginbc!

    I'll have to take a look to see which women have faces to attract prosperous husbands! Does it basically just mean that the woman is beautiful? (or is the standard for 旺夫相 different from that of other women?) Interesting concept

    Oh, so if you wanted to use the word in a sentence, could you say: "她有旺夫相"? (and it's usually a compliment, I'm assuming?) or does it also sound like "gold-digger"... ?

    Yes, you could.
    旺夫相 doesn't necessarily entail beauty and certainly doesn't imply a gold-digger. It's the face of one who appears to be a good helper. What does a good helper look like? You beat me :D.
