来云南支教一年多，郝琳硕老师自己也记不清有多少次家访了。

This is from the Standard Course Book of HSK5, section 24.

How to literally translate this: 来云南支教一年多？

来(arriving)云南(Yunnan)支教(voluntarily teaching)一年多(more than a year)...

How to make it make sense?

    来(arriving)云南(Yunnan)支教(voluntarily teaching)一年多(more than a year)...

    Arriving in Yunnan to voluntarily teach more than a year, the teacher...

    Something like that?

    Yes. I failed to see which part of the translation is difficult to understand. I consider this structure is quite similar to the English.
    Is that because of the structure?

    Condition:
    来 云南 支教 一年了，
    to where (directional phrase) do what (verb phrase) for how long (complement phrase),

    Event:
    郝琳硕老师 ... 记不清 ...
    who (subject)... do what (verb phrase)
