Hello,

I am having some difficulty understanding a certain part of a sentence because I am not sure if it is referring to a year or to an actual number of people. Here is the sentence:

이 조사에서는 7-59세의 국민 중 한 달에 한 번 이상 인터넷을 이용하는 인구는 1998만 명(53.7%)에 이르는 것으로 나타났다. From this survey, it showed that the population of citizens among 7-59 years of age who use the internet more than once in one month has reached 53.7% in 1998 only?

Thank you.

    Hello ekdog2,
Here, "1998만 명" refers to a number of population - more specifically, the number of population using the Internet at least once a month. "만" is ten thousand, and "명" is a counter for people/a person. For example "5만 명" is "fifty thousand people" in English. There is no indication of 1998만 being a year, so safe to say, it is referring to a number of population.

"According to the survey, the number of people using the Internet at least once a month reached 19 millions and 980 thousands." Hope this helps!
