20 minutes late = late by 20 minutes?

Hello everybody,

I've been wondering if it's ok to say "late by 20 minutes" instead of "20 minutes late" when you want to emphasize the duration of lateness. Like in "I was 20 minutes late for work yesterday" and "Yesterday you were 10 minutes late and today you are late by 20!"

Thanks.
