299 - two ninety-nine?

Senior Member
Hi. I've read several threads on reading numbers but couldn't find the answer.

I know you read $2.99 as one two ninety-nine, but if it's $299, do native speakers ever read it as "two ninety-nine" instead of "two hundred and ninety-nine"?

Thank you.

That's possible if somebody is reading from a list of numbers that all fall between 100 and 999. In that case, repeating "hundred" for every number would be needless.
