I'm looking for a word.

When you look for a job, you might send out lots of letters and emails to companies just on the off-chance that they'll have a job available.

This is called a "____ email"

Can anyone think of the word I'm looking for?

Maybe a "query"?

I see people using "speculative" for this type of e-mail/letter/application. I'd call the entire process "putting out feelers", and of course phoning is "cold calling".

That's what I call a spec email, Toom ~ or emailing people on spec.
