Hi all,

Google confuses me on this. If I want to say "...these are all steps towards a / an European Union free of corruption..." which should I use: "a" or "an"? And, more importantly, so as not to waste any of your future time with similar questions, why? :)

Thank you,

LB

    A European Union.

Because Europe is pronounced with a hard Y sound (You-rup). So is union (youn-yun), by the way.

A union. A unicycle. An under achiever. An uncle.

 really sorry, I usually check before asking, but I was in a rush right now. And having googled "a / an European Union," none of the results from above were listed. Sorry!
