A.B - Able(-bodied) seaman

french (France)
Hello everybody,
Quote from Mutiny on the Bounty from Ch Nordhoff and J Norman Hall :
Do you think war with France is likely? I asked.
War with France is always likely, he replied smiling. If I were an A.B I should curse the thought of any war.
Could you tell me the meaning of the initials in bold?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    It could be "Able Seaman".
    According to Wikipedia
Able seaman was originally entered using the abbreviation AB instead of the more obvious AS in ships' muster books or articles.
