a beta launch

From Wikipedia's Software Release Life Cycle: Beta (named after the second letter of the Greek alphabet) is the software development phase following alpha. It generally begins when the software is feature complete. The focus of beta testing is reducing impacts to users, often incorporating usability testing. The process of delivering a beta version to the users is called beta release and this is typically the first time that the software is available outside of the organization that developed it.

Beta software is not complete, in the sense that there will still be bugs to work out. Quite often beta releases are free and will work for a limited time, from weeks to months, before they expire. The idea is that beta users or testers will tell the software company what the problems are so they can be fixed before the company releases the product to the general public. At this time, the software is usually for sale (no longer free).

So a beta launch is the launch of a new service or software product in beta form.
