When you say "we're going to have a big family meal" does it mean there's a lot of family members that will be with you eating? Or there will be lots of food when you eat with your family?

I think this sentence is used with both meanings.

    - Our family has our big family meal at lunch time. It is the only time we can all be there.
    - For Thanksgiving we are having a big family meal. Did you know I have seven cousins?
