a big mouth and blue <underlids>.

Dear all
Please confirm if "underlids" in the following context from "Manhattan Transfer" by Dos Passos simply means the lower eyelids:
She shook her hair loose of the crimpers and combed out the new mousybrown waves. She had a pale startled face with a big mouth and blue underlids.

I have never heard it and can't find a dictionary that includes it. I would assume it's the author's own word for the lower eyelid.
