As with all Shakespeare’s plays, there is a great swamp, a big muddy, of criticism instructing one how to read Othello, and providing guidance on the character of Iago.
(Envy; J. Epstein)

Would you be so kind as to tell me whether 'muddy' is a noun here?

Thanks.

It's a reference to the river in "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy," by Pete Seeger, a symbol of a situation from which it is difficult to extricate oneself.

Here's a link to the Wikipedia article.
