"For instance she reports on a respondent who was deeply involved in a story ont he reality programme 999. In this a lorry driver had been impaled on a fence. The respondent was 'riveted, a bit ill, horribly fscinated, glued to the seat with suspense as the emergency services tried to free him, totally sympathetic to the victim's feelings and reactions'.

Does it mean that he felt sick as it must have been something that caused such reactions - lorry driver impaled on a fence?

Like most of us would, he felt a bit sick, yes -- especially considering the mind's ability to imagine it happening to us. :)
